Choosing Keywords for Articles

This is a continuation to Stop Wasting Time and Start Your First Site. If you did not read that article we recommend that you do so, even if you might not need it.

Now that you have a blog/site and a main topic to cover you will want to choose some keywords that you want to cover. Once again, this is designed for beginners and we have to put an emphasis on that. The only tool that you will really need at this point is Google Adwords Keywords Tool, which is 100% free. To better highlight what we are going to talk about we would assume that our blog is about Bodybuilding.

1. Choosing the Main Keywords

We go to the Keywords Tool and we start a simple search of the term "bodybuilding". We recommend that you tick "Only show Ideas Containing My Search Terms" to make everything easier at start. Here is what we got:

As you can imagine, the stats there do mean something but let us not worry to much about that. After all, this is just basics. Look at the main keywords there like "bodybuilding supplements" or "bodybuilding exercises". Make a list of 5 to 10 such terms. These are going to be your categories.

2. Choosing Keywords for Posts

Now this is something that does count a lot. While we do have the main keywords we also want to target our posts properly and choose what we call long tail keywords for that. Later on we are to discus this properly but for now let us just think about what we can write, about just one post.

As an example, let us talk about "bodybuilding workouts" as our category topic. You should go to Google and look for the term. Look at other sites and think about how you can cover this topic. After that write everything down. Let us say that you want to write about a biceps workout. We go to Adwords Keywords Tool and we end up with this:

By simply looking at the results you can end up finding different good topics to write about. For instance, "Biceps Workouts With Dumbbells". This can be the title of one of your articles. It will be good in terms of SEO without even thinking about it too much. In a similar fashion we can go and find a lot of topics to write about.

3. General Facts About Using Keywords

This topic is huge and many will tell you what to do. Sometimes what some people say is different when compared with what others say. Our recommendation is really simple! Just take that post keyword that you found and use it naturally in your articles. Simply put it in 2-4 times in one 400 words article and focus on the content. It is highly important to write high quality articles for your visitors. This is what will make them come back. Basically focus on information. If you are writing about workouts with dumbbells then tell people how to do that, do not try to add extra sentences just so that you can put in more keywords! This is more than enough for starters. You will go for more complex work after you have money to invest. At the moment we simply assume that you do not have money for investments.
